Rumbles from
"Down Under"

Thanks to a customer for a tip regarding our Pacific neighbors in New Zealand.

The current flag of New Zealand

Some Kiwi's are apparently considering a change to their flag. Reasons given include the fact that the current flag is too easily confused with their rival nation, Australia, and that the Union Jack on the flag is too strong a reminder of their colonial past, not reflecting their current ethnic diversity.

Some possible designs for a new New Zealand flag.

Read all about the issue in the internet newspaper, Sunday Harold, or use the New Zealand Harold search engine to locate numerous articles on the subject, or click on the graphic above to visit the "official" NZ flag change website.

Meanwhile, remember that here at we still carry the current New Zealand flags in all sizes.

Star "Factoids"
Part III

So it isn't just at the Academy Awards that we get to see lots of stars: You know they're on flags as well. In the last two issues, we spoke about single and multiple stars on flags, but we only referenced regular, five-pointed stars with their points oriented to the top of the flag. This month we'll look at some different stars on flags.

(Once more, try to guess the flag before moving the cursor over the images.)

Australia Azerbaijan
Burundi Israel
Jordan Malaysia
Nauru Philippines

These do not include sun-like images, but do give a general idea of the diverse representations of stars on flags. We'll talk about star clusters and suns and moons on flags in up-coming issues.

In Peace Through Understanding

If for whatever reason, Dear Reader, you've had occasion to receive an email from us, you may have noticed the phrase "In Peace Through Understanding" in our signature line. The other day, a recipient inquired as to the source of that phrase. Here's a part of my reply:

Thanks for asking. When I started this business (back in 1987!) it was built on the simple philosophy that the more we all knew about each other, the better off we all would be. Furthermore, without getting too “airey-fairey” on you, I believe that since all fear is based on ignorance, peace can only be based on understanding. It’s a simple concept, but it takes some work to really live it. So, it’s an original phrase I came up with to try to encapsulate this idea, but I hold no ownership to it. Others have asked to use it and that’s just fine by me.

Her response:

Very Cool. It has been my experience that while people say they want peace, most people do not put forth the effort to bring it or have the patience to work toward under-standing. I'm finding it hard to dodge politics on this subject. I know understanding is very hard sometimes and appreciate the rare people who truly make the effort.
